Palantir a Paris
by Larry Garfield
It's that time of year again. Time to pack your bags, find your passport, and head off to immerse yourself in Drupal for several days. That's right, DrupalCon Paris is just around the corner!
Seven Palantiri will be attending this year, all staying on the beautiful Ile Saint Louis. It's a small island in the middle of the river where Palantir will be tucked into a spacious apartment for a week. You know where the party room is now. (OK, the coding room. Same thing.) Neighbors welcome!
And of course, as always Palantir will be quite talkative. Here's a rundown of the Palantir track:
George DeMet will be leading the Foreign Affairs Case Study session with Ken Rickard and Matt Butcher. This is the same site that hit Drupal.org's front page recently to much applause, and also was the debut of the Deploy module. We'll be talking about the guts of the system and how to integrate three authentication systems, mass data imports, three analytics packages, and multi-server staged deployment into a single, sustainable site.
For the programming crowd, you can start off with A hands-on intro to module development by Matt Butcher, who has literally written the book on the subject. (No, really, it's called Learning Drupal 6 Module Development. The movie was better, though.) Bring your laptops and get ready to code. Afterward, stick around for a look at the latest rage in Web services, QueryPath. Think jQuery meets PHP meets Matt Butcher.
If you're looking for something more advanced, begin your DrupalCon with Larry "Crell" Garfield's Views 2 for Developers. Views is the Swiss Army knife of Drupal, capable of handling about eight times as many tasks as you think it can. Add a few custom plugins or handlers and it can handle 3x more. Want to know how Views really works, and how to make it do your job for you? Come on by.
While Larry is not speaking opposite webchick (for a change), he is on directly opposite Palantir theming guru Colleen "caroltron" Carroll. Colleen will be talking about some of her favorite subjects, i.e., going home on time and taking vacations. The way to do that, of course, is with Sustainable Theming. Want a site that your client can extend without having to make you do more work every 10 minutes? Let Colleen show you how, with her wingman Zen Master John "JohnAlbin" Wilkins.
Lest you think John is slacking, though, he has his very own session on day 2 about dancing. Yes, dancing. Specifically, making Drupal dance by working with the design community to create web designs that will make your visitors want to dance. (Rumor has it there may be dancing in the session, too. You'll have to show up to find out.)
Site builders may be interested in the Sharing content across multiple sites with Domain Access, a technique that Palantir has used extensively of late. If you thought the node access system was just for controlling user access, think again. Ken "agentrickard" Rickard will show you how to split your site across multiple domains and share content between related sites.
And oh yeah, Tiffany will be there, too.
If that wasn't enough for you, we'll also be around in the BoF area. Crafty Drupalers can learn how to make real Drupal patches. Module developers looking to get a jump start on porting their modules to Drupal 7 can also come by the BoF-ified coverage of Drupal's new database layer. And you can probably corner most of us at other times, too, in the hallway, BoF room, lunch room, hotel room, or whatever other room we end up in.
Rendez-vous à Paris!
