American Repertory Theater Site Launch

by Evan Clossin

Find your seats and settle in for the premiere of the American Repertory Theater's new Web site, built in Drupal 6 by Palantir. Housed at Harvard University, the A.R.T. is widely recognized as one of the best theater companies in the country. The site is one of the first prominent manifestations of a large-scale rebranding effort spearheaded by famed theater and opera director Diane Paulus, who recently took over as A.R.T.'s artistic director.

The site's design is based on concepts developed by Minelli, Inc. and wireframes developed by Palantir to incorporate all aspects of the site's information architecture and functionality. The result is a site that effectively conveys the new A.R.T. brand and is a true representation of everything they have to offer. We also seamlessly integrated an external ticketing system for the new site, making it that much easier to get to the show. Visit their site today and see what is generating all the buzz.

Wow, the site looks MUCH more exciting now, more targeted to younger theatre-goers. When I worked there 20 years ago, they were fresh but still perhaps stuffy. Much of their audience was older and surprisingly conservative and it felt like there was an ongoing battle to hold onto them while still doing exciting work and attracting younger people. Looks like the new AD has jumped off the fence!

The rotating banner images look great. Lightbox? Could you guys offer a little more write-up on how you translated the design into a theme? Did you start from scratch? What regions did you set up? What special features needed to be incorporated, etc?

We're working on a case study now that will go into more detail about the project and Palantir's process. Look for that on our site in the next few weeks.
